It's among our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).
It's also the sole robot vacuum or mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured lighting system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can completely self-refill and empty its base station and boasts an its own self-cleaning mop pads.
As with other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, offering a simple mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's loud, which can be a problem if you run it in the morning before work or in the evening as you try to sleep.
It's also somewhat expensive, although it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally powerful and look better. Its vacuum has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also comes with a feature called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house based on how dirty these areas tend to be.
If you own a larger home, you should consider selecting a robot that comes with spot or zone cleaning mode. This allows you to tell the robot which area of your home needs to be cleaned using the app or voice control. A stairway mode is useful if you own a number of furniture. Finally the recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.

The RX3 is more advanced than the price suggests. It is a good vacuum cleaner and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using only one pad and a rotating motion that is more efficient than most of the mop cleaners with robots that we've tried. It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.
The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, arrange the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritise your dirtiest rooms to improve performance. The app offers a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, customized mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
It also has the ability to reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It has an impressive 8,000 Pascal suction as well as clever combs for removing pet hair. You can also organize a spot-cleaner which will thoroughly clean an area.
